Continuing our series of interviews connecting with other organisations in Wales which share our core values of waste reduction, skill sharing and community cohesion, we spoke with Aled Wyn Thomas,Deputy House Manager at the Sherman Theatre. As well as being home to our Cathays repair cafe, the Sherman Theatre undertake lots of community and environmentally focussed work, as Aled explains below.

Our focus is on the development and production of new writing and on nurturing Welsh and Wales-based artists. We tell local stories with global resonance, all rehearsed and produced in our historic building here in the heart of Cathays.

We are very mindful of the environmental impact of creating artistic work. Typically after a show finishes its’ run, rather than sending waste to landfill, our production team will strip the set and re-use as much of the components as possible for the next show – timber, fabric, metal hinges, door handles, nuts, bolts, screws. Our workshops are pretty full!

In addition to producing award-winning theatrical productions, we are also very passionate about community engagement. Through our Volunteer Usher scheme, we are able to help people enjoy live theatre for free, make new friends and help them improve their confidence and well-being.

In a way, the Sherman belongs to the community. The theatre is there for people to access in a way that suits them, and we will help them do that be it through performance, creative outreach projects, workshops, training events, community events. We aim to find the best fit for everyone, so that you can make the most of the experience, and know that our theatre is a place that is open to everyone.
